When traveling to Peru, one should be aware of the climate. The seasons of Lima are the exact opposite of the seasons of the United States and Europe. The summer season starts in December and ends in April. Lima’s historic center is noted for its cathedrals and churches. This is where the Main Square or Plaza Mayor is located. It is here that the Spaniard Francisco Pizarro founded Lima and where many historic events have occurred. This area was used as a bullring, a scaffold for execution, and it was the site of the Peruvians declaration of independence in 1821. It is also where one can find the Presidential Palace, the Cathedral and Archbishop’s Palace, and City Hall. While on a holiday, Peru has many beautiful churches and cathedrals, with many being in Lima. The Lima Cathedral was built in 1625 but was rebuilt in 1940 after earthquake damage. It consists of oil paintings and sculptures from the 17th and 18th centuries. The San Francisco Church was built in the 17th century on top of tunnels which were used as a cemetery during the colonial period. The Santo Domingo Church was finished during the 16th century and this was where the San Marcos University was founded in 1551. The La Merced Church, built in the 18th century, features a wonderful example of Spanish colonial architecture and fine collections of oil paintings and carvings from the colonial period. The Torre Tagle Palace is a wonderful site for some of the best examples of colonial architecture in Peru. Built is 1730, it is now the seat of the Foreign Affairs Ministry. Another site to see while on holiday Peru is the Casa Aliaga mansion, the oldest standing mansion in the area. It is popular for hosting a variety of cultural events.
