Helsinki-based architects Suunnittelutoimisto Amerikka slice the way to the heart of their home city with the design of contemporary knife shop, Marttini. In a fitting combination, Suunnittelutoimisto Amerikka unites traditional materials with contemporary display methods to design a 36 sq-m interior that displays over 160 products. As many details were made to resemble the craft of Finnish furniture, the shop design also takes influence from traditional Finnish tools and materials. Wood, leather and steel were obvious material choices, as they all play a role in the construct of a traditional Finnish puukkos knife.

The designers aimed to retain the laid-back feel of the existing bar, whilst bringing some of its glamorous art deco roots to light. Curved ‘cabaret’ bar seating and a podium stage now make strong features, and warm colour palettes and mood lighting detract from the lack of natural light. Each of the two rooms were given a slightly different style to give the impression of a natural design progression. Polished brass details bounce light in arbitrary angles around the richer colour schemes, attracting the eye to finer features. Lighter areas are contrasted with darker finishes to maintain an overall balanced character within the music venue. The design has been finished with a reused wall, pendant lights and a huge custom-designed brass chandelier, while mismatched soft furnishings and furniture complete the un-designed, domestic feel. In its entirety, the space aims to make people feel at home.

Bar 8 is a mysterious grotto where colours and textures echo garden foliage. In this dimly lit den, low tables are dotted with tiny lights and glistening beams make their way in from the garden outside. Jouin and Manku also designed the monumental central bar from a 9-tonne block of marble. The striking interior in Sur Mesure enhances the diner’s culinary pleasure rather than diverting attention from the food. ‘The contemporary setting has a comfy, slip-off-your-shoes kind of vibe,’ says Manku. Textile designer Heidi Winge Strøm draped walls and ceiling with a flame-retardant fabric, Trevira CS. A stroll through the garden takes visitors to Camélia, an all-day restaurant and breakfast room whose name refers to the fragrant blossoms that grace the garden in the summer. Camélia boasts a cake counter with tempting treats displayed in wooden alcoves. Nature floats in and out of its doors, with tile floors giving way to wooden surfaces and lamps seeming to sprout from rugs.

The whole space, which includes a mezzanine level, is dominated by a striking 2,000-sq-m ceiling made from beaten stainless steel. It reflects the movement and colours of the food market back down to the ground floor through two full-height atria. ‘The idea of a strong visual connection from the lower floors to the food hall played a big part in the development of the concept,’ says project director Chris Waite of London-based architectural practice Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands.
