How can we help?
|What can I do on GLOTTER?
Create personalized world maps and add placemarks which include information (description, images and videos). Share interesting places, create maps with useful gadgets or tell about great experiences - You can give your fancy full scope. You can also embed your maps into external websites.
Furthermore you can even easily connect Slideshows (e.g. Flickr Web Album or a Picasa Album) with a World map or embed videos (e.g. YouTube or Vimeo).
Several useful Map services like Geocoder, Driving directions and Live Tracking complete the range of available tools.
|I like the concept of GLOTTER. How can I support the plattform?|
|I found a Bug! Where can I report it?
Please report any bugs (also inform us about your browser/OS version and send us a detailed error description) under Contact. Thanks in advance for your help!
Old browsers are not supported any more and we strongly recommend switching to the latest version of your favorite browser for reasons of Security and User experience.
|I can't open a page and/or receive an error message.
Maybe we're updating parts of the website right now. Please try to reload the page in a few minutes by pressing Ctrl+F5 (Windows) or cmd+R (Mac).
If you still experience problems, let us know.
|How can I zoom into the map?
Zooming is possible by using the navigation keys, by double-clicking in the map or by using the Scroll wheel (in Fullscreen-Mode). On mobile devices you can use touch gestures.
|How can I move the map?
Simply move the pointer while you press the mouse key (on screens), use your finger (on touch screens) or click on the navigation keys.
|I want to view maps in Google Earth 3D mode!
You need a small Browser Plugin to view 3D maps in Google Earth mode. Download it here for free: Google Earth API.
|How does Geolocation "Tracking" work? Do I have to worry about my privacy?
When you activate and approve "Geolocation" the locationbased data of your IP-address and possibly nearby wireless access points or data from the GPS receiver of your mobile device will be used to get an estimate of your location. Accuracy varies greatly from location to location. An important note: Your data will not be stored or transfered to others without your permission.
The purpose of this tool is better usability. You can detect your current position (for a new placemark) with a single click.
More info can be found under W3C Geolocation API.
|I'm clicking on the "Target" icon but the Geolocation is not working. What's wrong?
There could be many reasons why it doesn't work as expected.
First of all the W3C Geolocation API needs to be supported by your browser. This feature is a Web Standard and has been integrated by all major Software vendors into the current browser versions.
Furthermore it needs to be enabled in your browser or OS settings. Please refer to the respective Software Support pages for help.
Please note that the detection of your location needs to be permitted for every website on first start.
|The Geocoder shows a wrong clocktime and timezone!
When opening the page the Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) is shown. If the checkbox next to the clock symbol is not activated, search for a location and then click on the icon to retrieve the clocktime for the current position. If the time is still wrong, please inform us under Contact (Don't forget to include the location name so that we are able to reproduce the issue).
Please note that the time lookup service only works on land masses or on on geocoded places.
|The Preview images are broken and show a strange image instead!
GLOTTER uses the Google Static Maps API, to generate Preview images. Use of Google Static Maps is subject to a query limit per viewer per day. After the limit has been reached, the following image will be displayed indicating that the quota has been exceeded:
After 24 hours the Preview images should be displayed correctly again. Thanks for your understanding!
|I think that an entry violates the legal terms!

|Is it possible to create "personal" maps that are hidden for others?
You can create personal maps by selecting "Private" when creating your entry. Private entries only can be accessed by the original creator.
|I want to embed a map in my personal Website/Blog!
If it's apparent that the map was created using GLOTTER (e.g. backlink to the original entry) you can also embed maps in external websites. Just click on the link "Embed in website" which can be found on every public entry and paste the HTML-code into your website-content. Of ycourse you can also customize the size of the map.
|Why is embedding disabled for some maps?
"Private" entries can't be embedded in external websites.
|Where can I find my maps?
All your maps are listed in your personal User profile. Private entries are hidden unless you are signed in.
|Can I set the initial viewstate (coordinates, zoomlevel) of a map?
By default the map gets adjusted to the bounds of the placemarks. To manually set the viewstate you have to add two parameters - coordinates (latlng) and zoomlevel (zoom) - to the URL.
e.g. Zoom in to "Washington D.C" in the entry "World cities and flags":
|Can I set the initial viewmode (Satellite, Roadmap, etc.) of a map?
To manually adjust the imagery you have to add the parameter "maptype" to the URL and set the viewmode (Roadmap, Satellite, Hybrid, Terrain).
e.g. Satellite View
|Is it possible to work with other users on an entry?
You can collaborate with other users and allow them to add placemarks by selecting the category "Collab" in the Edit mode. Please note that the collaboration is only possible with users who have been confirmed as "friends".
Open the Edit mode of your entry, copy the Link from the address bar and share it with your friends. If a registered user sees the following icon it's possible for her/him to add placemarks!
Of course the original user, who created the entry, has full control over the content and can delete inappropriate placemarks if necessary!
|What is MultiMap?
"MultiMap" is a simple Collaboration feature that "combines" multiple entries on a single map. It works with all public entries and placemarks. Just separate the entry-ids with a comma (,) in the URL - That's all!
e.g. MultiMap New York
Please not that the space (memory capacity) per MultiMap is limited. If you see an empty map you possibly have to deactivate some entries.
|Is it possible to create a copy of an entry?
Your own entries or entries that have been published with a "Creative Commons" licence can be copied and adapted. Follow these steps to create a copy of an entry:
1. Sign in
2. Open the entry
3. Click on the button
Finally the new entry can be modified in the Edit mode!
|Create a Map|
|How can I categorize my entries? What are Tags?
Use tags by adding keywords to the according input field when creating your entry. The purpose of "Tags" is to describe your entry in some words - relevant tags combine similar entries and can display them in a Tagcloud.
e.g. Tags that describe a world travel with photo slideshow (separated by space or comma):
worldtravel summer 2007 photos slideshow
|How can I edit/delete my entries?
Open the entry and click on the Edit button. Or sign in to your personal User profile, search for the entry and click on the Edit icon .
|How can I edit/delete markers?
Open the Edit mode of your entry and click on a Marker to perform changes or delete the placemark.
|How do I retrieve the coordinates/position of my placemarks?
You don't need to know the coordinates of a location. Just use the Geocoder-function and search for any address or place name - you can also drag'n'drop the Marker to adjust the position.
Feel free to try out our Geocoder service under www.glotter.com/geocoder before you start creating your first entry.
|How many markers can be added to a map?
You can add a maximum of 100 placemarks per entry.
|I would like to add a Live Tracking path into a map? How can this be done?
There are a few prerequisites which need to be considered before using Live Tracking:
1. You need a GPS-enabled Smartphone or a Tablet with Mobile Internet connection
2. The mobile Browser needs to support HTML5 Geolocation
3. Your browser shouldn't run in background mode since the coordinates need to be synchronized constantly (about every 30 seconds)
4. Last but not least: You need to be outdoors (or in a car) and have a clear view to the satellites.
We recommend to try it out first by using the Live Tracking service under m.glotter.com/livetracking or under www.glotter.com/livetracking to get to know the feature before you launch it in the Edit-mode. Please note that the path length is limited (the red progress bar indicates the remaining time).
|My Live Tracking path is wrong? Is it possible to modify the path somehow?
Due to potential technical problems (bad GPS signal, Internet connection timeout, etc.) which can occur occassionally it is possible that the wrong coordinates have been synchronized with the system. In this case you can manually modify the saved path. Edit your entry and simply drag'n'drop the nodes of the polyline to correct it. Don't forget to save the changes when you're done!
The Live Tracking Service does not offer a possibility to modify the path.
|Is it possible to add additional markers to a Live Tracking path?
Sure - You can add markers as usual in the Edit mode and indicate important incidents along the path.
|Can I add my own KML/KMZ-data?
Your existing KML- or KMZ-files which have been created with a third-party tool can be uploaded to a new entry. Please note that there is a filesize limit.
Alternatively you can also link to external files.
|I want to add Street View imagery to an entry. How does it work?
Go to Street View and search for a location. If Street View is available you'll see a 360° image. Now you can adjust the view, copy the URL from the input field and paste it into "Street View" in the Edit-mode.
|I want to embed a photo slideshow (Picasa, Flickr, Photobucket) and/or video (YouTube, MyVideo, Vimeo, Dailymotion) into my entry. How does it work?
Photos: Just paste the Media RSS URL of your photo slideshow into the "Slideshow-field"!
Sample URL of a Slideshow:
Sample URL of a Web Album:
Sample URL of a Photobucket Slideshow:
Video: Copy the Video URL and paste it into the "Video-field"!
Sample URL of a video:
Sample URL of a video:
Sample URL of a Dailymotion video:
Sample URL of a MyVideo video:
|I can't find the weblink to the Media RSS Feed (for embedding a Slideshow of my photos)!
Flickr: Open a photostream or a group pool, scroll down and click on Subscribe to ... "Latest". Virtually any Flickr-Feed should work - just consider that the suffix of your RSS Feed must be "&format=rss_200"!
Picasa: Open a gallery and click on the RSS-Feed button in your Browser or scroll down and click on "RSS" in the right column of your Web Album. Further information: http://picasa.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=47351
Photobucket: Open the photos and click on the RSS-Feed button in your Browser or scroll down and click on the RSS-Icon in the Footer of your gallery. Further information: http://pic.pbsrc.com/help/Content/RSS/OverviewRSS.htm
|What can I do with the "Logbook" feature?
If you activate "Logbook", all information from your placemarks (title, date, coordinates, description, etc.) are listed below your map.
You can keep a "travel diary" or create a "Geo Blog" and download the calendar data in the iCAL file format which can be imported into your calendar application (e.g. Microsoft Outlook, Lotus Notes, Apple Calendar, Google Calendar, Facebook, etc.). The date and the exact local time can be set for each placemark individually.
Furthermore you can take a tour ("Auto-Playback") of your placemarks in Google Earth mode.
|What timezone is used in the "Logbook" calendar which I can download?
By default the timezone of the Web Server is used. But if you change the date or the time of a placemark manually the correct timezone will be calculated for this location.
After downloading the *.ICS (iCAL) file in your Logbook the time will be adjusted automatically in your Calendar application. This may help you coordinate worldwide appointments.
|I want to connect all of my markers with a line! What do I have to do?
1. Choose a line color while editting the entry.
2. "First come - first served principle" ... A line is generated between two placemarks depending on their individuell timestamps. The timestamp (date and time) of any placemark can be edited manually in the Marker Edit mode (e.g. 2000-12-31 12:00:00).
|How can I colorize complete countries?
Territories can only be colorized if a placemark has been added to the country. Create a new marker (e.g. capital of the country) and select a territory color:
Please note that you can only indicate areas of entire countries!
|I want to activate the Google Earth Tour-playback. What do I have to do?
Create a new entry and activate "Logbook". Now you can view the tour in Google Earth 3D-Mode by clicking on the Play-Button.
A tipp: If you add the exact timestamp (date and time) to your placemark you can even see the correct position of the sun at the specific time.
|What's "Creative Commons"?
If the creator has applied the Creative Commons Attribution license (reuse allowed) to an entry, other users are free to create a copy and adapt it to their needs!
